When pipes are subjected to heat, several factors come into play regarding their expansion

6/17/2024 (Permalink)

Water damage from burst pipe A pipe burst in an El Cajon home, this was likely caused by heat expansion.

When pipes are subjected to heat, several factors come into play regarding their expansion:

  1. Material Expansion: Different materials expand at different rates when heated. Metals, commonly used in pipes, expand linearly with temperature. The coefficient of linear expansion varies by material.
  2. Length Changes: As pipes heat up, they expand longitudinally (lengthwise). The amount of expansion depends on the material's coefficient of linear expansion and the temperature change.
  3. Diameter Changes: Pipes also expand in diameter when heated. This radial expansion is related to the material's coefficient of volumetric expansion.
  4. Stress and Strain: Thermal expansion causes stress within the material of the pipe. This stress can potentially lead to deformation or even failure if the expansion is significant or if the pipe is constrained.
  5. Support and Anchoring: To accommodate thermal expansion without causing damage, pipes are often installed with expansion joints or loops. These allow the pipe to expand and contract freely without stressing the surrounding structures.
  6. Calculation and Design: Engineers calculate the expected thermal expansion of pipes based on the material properties and the temperature range to ensure the design can accommodate these changes safely.
  7. Practical Considerations: In real-world applications, especially in industrial settings or areas with extreme temperature variations, managing thermal expansion is critical to prevent damage to the piping system and ensure its longevity.

Understanding how pipes expand under heat helps engineers and designers plan and implement systems that can operate safely and efficiently across varying environmental conditions. We at SERVPRO of El Cajon, see this when the temperatures go up this time of year.

After a storm floods a home, the aftermath can be quite challenging. Here's a general overview of what typically happens and how SERVPRO® can help.

  1. Assessment: Once the storm has passed and it's safe to return, residents and homeowners assess the damage. They'll inspect the extent of the flooding, checking areas such as basements, crawl spaces, and ground floors.

  3. Water Removal: The next step is to remove the water from the home. This may involve using pumps, wet/dry vacuums, or calling in professionals with specialized equipment for water extraction. Here at SERVPRO of El Cajon we have the equipment designed specifically for this.
  4. Drying Out: After the standing water is removed, the affected areas need to be thoroughly dried out to prevent mold and mildew growth. This can be done using fans, dehumidifiers, and opening windows and doors to encourage airflow. Our highly trained technicians know how to do this to ensure that it is properly dried.
  5. Cleanup and Sanitization: Once dry, the home needs to be cleaned and sanitized to remove any remaining dirt, debris, and contaminants carried in by the floodwater. This includes disinfecting surfaces and items that came into contact with the floodwater. SERVPRO of El Cajon has a warehouse that we can clean and store items until the home is ready to receive the contents back.
  6. Repair and Restoration: Depending on the extent of the damage, repairs may be needed to restore the home to its pre-flood condition. This could involve replacing flooring, drywall, insulation, electrical wiring, appliances, and furniture that were damaged beyond repair.
  7. Preventative Measures: After the immediate cleanup and restoration, homeowners may also take steps to prevent future flooding, such as installing flood barriers, sump pumps, or elevating electrical outlets and appliances.

Overall, recovering from a flood can be a lengthy and challenging process, but taking swift and thorough action can help minimize damage and restore the home as quickly as possible.  Our technicians and expertise can help get this process done quickly and professionally.

Title: Wildfire Preparedness: Protecting Lives and Communities

Wildfires can ravage landscapes and threaten lives and homes, making preparedness a crucial aspect of living in fire-prone areas. By taking proactive measures, individuals and communities can significantly reduce the risks associated with these devastating natural disasters.

Firstly, creating defensible space is essential. Clearing vegetation and maintaining a safe distance between structures and flammable materials can hinder the fire's spread. Additionally, regular inspections of chimneys, roofs, and gutters are crucial to prevent ember ignition.

Establishing an emergency plan is equally vital. Families should develop evacuation strategies, determine meeting points, and assemble emergency supply kits with essentials such as food, water, and medical supplies. Staying informed through local news, weather alerts, and community emergency systems is key to swift response and action.

Collaboration is crucial. Communities can organize neighborhood watch programs, coordinate with fire departments, and participate in fire drills. Education campaigns about fire safety and the importance of early reporting can help foster a culture of preparedness.

By prioritizing wildfire preparedness, we can safeguard lives, protect communities, and mitigate the devastating impact of these natural disasters. Together, we can build resilience and ensure a safer future for all.

If your property is affected by fire, SERVPRO of El Cajon is here to help.  We are available 24/7 for any water or fire emergency.

A Smokers Lasting Legacy

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

This was SERVPRO team cleaning the wall to show what was left behind

Cigarettes smoke contains a variety of chemicals, some cling and build up on surfaces that are exposed to it. In your home, cigarette smoke can build up.

Besides clinging to walls, curtains and other household items, cigarette smoke can also cling to electronic components (especially computers) and have disastrous effects over time. For example, with computers, the smoke will cling to anything that’s emitting heat like fans and processors. This heat already attracts dust but the dust just magnifies when you add cigarette smoke to the mix. Also, cigarette smoke carries moisture with it and can lead to both a corrosion of parts and a dangerous build-up of dust.

Researchers have known for some time that third-hand smoke, as this leftover residue is known, sticks around in the environment long after the smoke has cleared.

If you have fire a damage or just a simple clean up due to a fire that left residue call us here at SERVPRO of El Cajon at 619-447-7776. Our commitment is to come in and get the job done "Like it never even happened."

shut off valves

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

Do You Know Where your Shut-off Values are? Well you Should?

All homes are equipped with gas and water emergency shut-off valves. They are an important part of your home’s mechanical system, and it’s vital that you know where they are located before an emergency occurs.

How to Locate Your Home’s Shut-Off Valves

Shut-off valves are often hidden from view, and they vary in location, shape, and number based on the age of your home, your community’s local codes, and more.

  • Gas Valve: If your home has natural gas, the main shut off valve is located just before the gas meter. Also called a street-side valve, it’s typically rectangular in shape. Gas companies would prefer that you not touch this valve but, rather, use the house-side main shut-off valve located after the meter. If you live in a newer home with a high-pressure gas system, you’ll see a flexible copper pipe that runs from the meter to another location in your house. In this case, your shut-off valve is most likely next to your furnace or water heater.
  • Water Valve: Just about all water meters have one main shut-off valve that cuts off all water to the main house. Water meters can be in the basement, crawl space, or near the furnace or water heater. For much older homes without a meter, the shut-off valve will be located on the main water supply pipe that comes into your home.

We offer these free to all our customers call us today to pick up your tag. 619-447-7776

Precautions to take During a Storm

5/13/2022 (Permalink)

With the recent thunderstorms and heavy winds in our area, it is important to be alert and take care during such conditions, both indoors and outdoors.

Here are a few precaution tips one can take when a heavy thunderstorm occurs:

  • If you’re planning an outdoors trip, postpone the trip or any activities that include being outdoors to a more suitable time.
  • Avoid driving during stormy conditions. Roads will be slippery and wet during bad weather conditions
  • Always try to go indoors when there is a heavy thunderstorm
  • If you cannot find suitable shelter, get in a car with a metal roof and sides. Make sure all windows are rolled up and doors are closed.
  • Keep away from concrete floors or walls. Lightning can travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.
  • Avoid water during a thunderstorm. Lightning can travel through plumbing.
  • Switch off all electronic equipment. This includes television sets, kitchen appliances, radios, etc. Lightning can travel through electrical systems.
  • Bring your pets indoors. Doghouses and other pet shelters are not suitable protection against lightning strikes
  • Stay away from isolated objects such as trees and light posts.
  • If you are fishing or swimming, get out of the water immediately, and move away from the body of water. Being near water is extremely dangerous during a lightning storm.

If you have any questions or need any advise, or just inspection.  Please give us a call. SERVPRO of El Cajon a call at 619-447-7776.

Safety tips with dealing with a flooded home

If you’ve never dealt with a flooded home before, the cleanup process can be a scary prospect. However, before even thinking about restoring your flooded home, it’s vital that you take the following safety precautions

  1. Don’t go back until it is safe. Wait for a broadcast saying it is safe to return to your area. When returning home, make sure to pay close attention to all caution and do not enter signs – they mean what they say. Entering a flooded area is dangerous even after the flood has passed.
  2. Notify your emergency contact. Make sure to contact a close friend or family member and let him or her know you are okay. It doesn’t hurt to let them know that you are returning to your home to assess damages, too. This should be a top priority on your flood safety checklist.
  3. Watch for wildlife. After a flood, wild animals will likely be dislocated – some may even enter your home. Make sure to check your surroundings, and beware of poisonous snakes or other critters in your area.
  4. Prepare for a collapsed floor or roof. When entering your home for the first time after a flood, be sure to use caution. A section of the roof might have collapsed, or could be close to collapsing. Similarly, the floor will be wet and weak, putting it at a high risk for giving out beneath you. Don’t let young children venture into your home before you have thoroughly checked all rooms.
  5. Be aware of gas leaks or electrical damage. Leaking gas can lead to explosions, and exposed electrical can mean shock if you touch standing water. Flood safety means staying clear of your home if you smell gas or see damaged electrical wires.
  6. Dispose of chemicals properly. Once inside your home, make sure to dispose of household chemicals and cleaners properly. Don’t dump them into the street, since this will contaminate the water and prove dangerous for your home and those of your neighbors.
  7. Protect your body. According to the Red Cross, proper flood safety measures involve wearing protective gear during cleanup. You should wear gloves, a face mask, long sleeves, and heavy footwear when handling objects that have seen flood damage.
  8. Throw out contaminated foods. Even canned goods that have been immersed in water are no longer safe for consumption. You must throw out all water damaged food items in order to protect your family from food poisoning or exposure to toxic chemicals that were transferred by the flood water.
  9. Check your water supply. Your water supply could be contaminated as a result of a flood. In order to adhere to flood safety measures, call your local health department for more information.
  10. Take pictures. Document all damages you come across in your home so you have an accurate estimate of your losses.
  11. Call your insurance company. Share with your flood insurance company all photos and documentation related to your flood damages.
  12. Find out if you can get financial assistance. If your location has been declared a disaster area by the government, you will likely have access to public aid and financial assistance when it comes to repairing your home.
  13. Get the water out. If your home saw flood damage to only a small portion of a room, you can likely remove the water yourself with a wet vac. More serious amounts of water require a sump pump, and you should leave the job of removing large quantities of water up to a professional. Just be sure to remove all standing water, or to call a company that can do it for you. Standing water can quickly become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other dangerous pests.
  14. Prevent or remove mold. Mold happens fast, within the first 24 to 48 hours. If an item has been wet for less than this time frame, it can be salvaged. However, it’s hard to dry out larger items like couches and mattresses. It is likely that these will need to be gotten rid of. Take pictures of all water damaged items before discarding so you have a record for insurance purposes.
  15. Seal off the damage. If you have broken windows or collapsed sections of roof, it’s your job to seal off those areas of your home to prevent further damage. Plywood and tarps are good temporary solutions in times of crisis.

4 SHOPS AFFECTED DUE TO PIKE LEAK

AIR MOVER DRYING

On this job a main water broke and caused the one business to affect 4 other businesses. SERVPRO of El Cajon was called out to clean up the after math of five businesses.  At the end the owner was impressed with how timely we finished and how organized we were.

The most common factor leading to a water  break is wear and tear.  The average life span of a water main is 60 years, some may last a lot longer and some may leak earlier. Another common reason for a water main to leak before reaching the 60 year point is shoddy plumbing.  The prior contractor may not have installed the pipe properly, or may not have used the adequate fittings when connecting to the city main or the piping inside your home.

This picture show the equipment being set up to start the drying process after all water had receded.

Water damage can cause mold if not dried properly

5/19/2021 (Permalink)

This is a picture of mold damage because it was not dried properly

The growing fear of mold is causing many states to rush to regulate indoor air quality, despite the lack of a consensus of scientific evidence linking mold to health effects.

Nearly half of all states are considering legislation that would regulate acceptable airborne mold levels. A second trend in legislation would require mold disclosure prior to the sale or lease of properties. This makes the person renting out or selling the property liable for future damages and fees that can be traced back to the presence of an organism that can grow to cover the surface of a ceiling in 24 hours, under the right conditions.

Owners and buyers and lessees may find it extremely beneficial and prudent to go ahead and have suspicious mildew smells or other signs of potential moisture problems investigated.

Contact your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional to help determine the cause of odors and to perform any necessary cleanup and restoration to protect your property. If a mold problem is discovered, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals can perform the remediation quickly and safely, adhering to nationally recognized standards.

With Jose being our lead technician he gets the job thoroughly

Here is Jose cleaning the ceiling fan due to a fire damage that happened up in Alpine while a family was sitting watching TV in the family room.

When there comes fire there comes soot clean up. Which are there are two different types of smoke-wet and dry. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of El Cajon will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedure will then be based on the information during pretesting.

Well SERVPRO came in and cleaned up the water and fire damage and then proceeded to work hard on the soot clean up. In a matter of time the crew had the house up and ready for the tenants to move back in. The owner was happy with the results and left us a great review and he said "Chuck and his team did great and our house never felt as clean as it does now."

Our goal is to make it...."Like it never even happened."

Fire damage cleanup

is a complicated process that often includes water damage, fire damage, and smoke damage. It’s also possible the property has structural problems, or requires emergency board up services to protect it from the outside elements. Because fire damage cleanup can be such a big job, you should consult with a fire damage restoration company who can help restore your  home back to preloss condition.

Fire Damage Cleanup Process

If your El Cajon, CA, home or business is damaged by fire, it is easy to be overwhelmed and discouraged by the level of destruction, even after a small fire. Fires cause damage directly to the things it comes into contact with, but also causes secondary damage from soot residues and smoke odor, as well as water damage from extinguishing the fire.

It is important to note that fire damage from soot and smoke can continue to cause damage to items long after the fire is out, and is one of the reasons cleanup should begin as soon as possible. Permanent etching, staining and discoloration are all possible if soot and smoke are allowed to remain on certain items following a fire.

Many items not directly destroyed by a fire can be salvaged and restored following a fire. Items with smoke damage can be cleaned and restored, but prompt action is necessary. A professional restoration company in El Cajon, CA will sort and inventory all item that can be restored from those that are destroyed, and will make every effort to return items to normal.

Toilet supply line leak

They immediately took action and extracted up the water, leaving the customer a little satisfied. Will and Ryan ended up setting a total of 27 air movers and 3 dehus.

Hoarding Cleaning Tips

11/20/2019 (Permalink)

In this photo you can see that the owner is a hoarder who loves to collect clothing.

Going through a hoarder’s stuff is somewhat similar to a scavenger hunt, only without the fun usually involved in the game. You may find some valuable items in the hoard but instead of being thrilled you will be sad and sorry for the person suffering from a severe anxiety disorder that prevents him/her from assessing the true value of his/her possessions, making informed decisions, and having a normal lifestyle. The affected individual will be most probably a friend or relative of yours, so the cleaning process will not only be very time-consuming and exhausting, but also rather emotional and difficult for you to deal with.

Tips:

Get hold of disposable gloves, dust masks, and goggles to avoid exposure to mold, parasites, and other health concerns that may be present in a hoarder's home. Wear sturdy shoes and a hard hat when you enter the house.

You are recommended to start with the bathroom, as you will need free access to clean running water and soap. Besides, you can finish the task really quickly.

Get rid of all the trash in a room first (not only obvious garbage but also items that are too damaged or too filthy to be used again)

When you have disposed of all the useless stuff, it’s time to address the piles of items that might be used again. Separate them in groups of similar items and decide which of them you’d like to keep and which ones you are going to donate.

When the house is free of trash and clutter, you can finally begin the intensive cleaning. This will be a very time-consuming and laborious process.

If the hoarder will be moving back to his/her home after the cleanup help the affected person maintain a clean and clutter-free living space – create an easy-to follow maintenance plan, visit often, and provide further assistance if necessary.
